I'm also pleased to hear that you will be continuing as a councillor at Westminster and as Chair of the LGA. I wouldn't want to be the only Cllr Milton in London! I am sure many backbench councillors in Labour-run boroughs will particularly welcome your influence on planning in London, fed up as we are with the drive to more and more massive development likely to place an intolerable strain on local infrastructure including transport. As an opposition councillor for Lewisham Central ward, I am particularly concerned by the cumulative effect of a tsunami of over-development here: the massive Lewisham Gateway and Loampit Vale developments plus a series of planning applications such as those for the Connington Road area. Each on their own might be OK. Taken together they are likely to present real problems in the future. I would expect you to go into detail on such issues so soon into your appointment, but I think many backbench councillors would appreciate a steer on the circumstances in which the new Mayor to prevent Labour councils foisting the architectural equivalents of bendy buses on the existing residents of town centre sites.
