Cllr Milton is Deputy Mayor

According to an article in Building at http://www.building.co.uk/story.asp?storycode=3112867 Boris Johnson has appointed Cllr Milton as his adviser on planning issues and described him as an “experienced public servant with a fantastic record of delivery in local government.”

Unfortunately, it's the other Cllr Milton, the Conservative leader of Westminster Council.

Nevertheless, I'm tempted to write to my namesake to ask for his views on dumping the the architectural equivalent of Stalinist bendy buses on Lewisham town centre.

Watch this space.

That's a jolly good idea Andrew, flip open your inkwell immediately!

Your wish was my command. Here is the e-mail wot I wrote:

To: Sir Simon Milton

May I offer you my congratulations on your appointment as Deputy Mayor, and as Boris Johnson's advisor on planning? I'm also pleased to hear that you will be continuing as a councillor at Westminster and as Chair of the LGA. I wouldn't want to be the only Cllr Milton in London!

I am sure many backbench councillors in Labour-run boroughs will particularly welcome your influence on planning in London, fed up as we are with the drive to more and more massive development likely to place an intolerable strain on local infrastructure including transport. As an opposition councillor for Lewisham Central ward, I am particularly concerned by the cumulative effect of a tsunami of over-development here: the massive Lewisham Gateway and Loampit Vale developments plus a series of planning applications such as those for the Connington Road area. Each on their own might be OK. Taken together they are likely to present real problems in the future.

I would expect you to go into detail on such issues so soon into your appointment, but I think many backbench councillors would appreciate a steer on the circumstances in which the new Mayor to prevent Labour councils foisting the architectural equivalents of bendy buses on the existing residents of town centre sites.

Cllr Andrew Milton
Liberal Democrat Councillor for Lewisham Central Ward
London Borough of Lewisham

PS I've put a YouTube video describing the problem on my blog at:

Ooops! There should have been a vital 'not' in the third para. Have written in correcting it!

BAH! Just spotted another typo in my e-mail. BUT NO MORE APOLOGIES!

Oh very well, sorry about that too!
