Disgruntled Commuter

Need to Know

Coming out of Dalston station this evening, I found that Hackney Police (God bless 'em) have erected an enormous electronic sign on the pavement right in front of it. It looks like the sort of thing they use to put messages up on motorways - big enough to be read at eighty mph. I found myself compelled to make a detour on my way to Sainsbury's to read what it said.

It said 'Pickpocket operating in this area ... are your valuables safe?'

And I'm thinking, 'what, just the one?' Obviously this latest initiative is designed to combat the fear of crime by trumpeting the fact that in the middle of one of the busiest markets in East London there is just one pickpocket left. Or maybe they really, really dislike this pickpocket and they are trying to ruin his or her day. Or maybe they couldn't fit 'pickpockets' into the space on their sign.

My second thought (twenty minutes later when I was about to pay for my shopping) was 'where the hell's my wallet?' Fortunately I found it buried at the bottom of my bag. But I wonder how many people were mesmerised by the monumental grandeur of the sign's folly and got their pockets picked when they were reading it?

It now says WE ARE TARGETTING DRUG DEALERS IN THIS AREA
the pickpocket signs have always been useful to pickpockets- expectially on the tube--
people check to make sure their wallet is safe -- showing the thief where it is.......
